Ex government official nabbed for alleged tender fraud involving R35m

A 52-year-old former high ranking government official is expected to appear in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court in October in connection with tender fraud amounting to about R35 million. He was arrested on Friday by the Hawks’ Commercial Unit. “It is alleged that the accused was instrumental in manipulating the tender processes of the Department of Health in the Western Cape between 2009 and 2010. The tenders‚ worth approximately R35 million‚ were in respect of provision of security services to local clinics in the Province.

Unpaid bills leave Cape cop cars idle

Dozens of broken police vehicles are gathering dust in Western Cape workshops – some since April – while many police stations routinely suffer a crippling shortage of vehicles. And two workshops claim the police owe them a total of R436 000 in unpaid vehicle repair bills. They are refusing to release any repaired vehicles or fix any of the others until they are paid.


Zille uses R87-million in drug war

The Western Cape provincial government has budgeted R87-million to fight drug and alcohol abuse, premier Helen Zille said on Monday. “Our commitment in this regard has led to a doubling of our annual budget for interventions to address substance abuse over the last four years, from just R42-million when we came into office in 2009, to R87-million this year,” she said.
