Crime Stats: SA’s Murder And Rape Situation Unpacked

While there was a marginal decrease of murders in the country, some provinces still experienced an increase, according to crime statistics. Police on Friday presented official crime statistics spanning from April 1 to December 2016 to the police committee in Parliament, where they painted a picture of a country winning the fight against crime. According to the statistics, 14 333 cases of murder were reported in the time period, a decrease of 10 in comparison to the previous trimester.


Man admits to raping 7 of daughter’s friends

A George man who initially faced more than 3 000 charges of rape and child pornography has pleaded guilty to 67 of them as part of a plea agreement. Eyewitness News reported that the State agreed to the plea bargain in exchange for a life sentence after the 51-year-old man admitted to the 67 charges. They included drugging and raping seven of his daughter’s friends during sleepovers at his home between 2012 and 2014. The girls were aged between 10 and 12.


Teacher in court after being accused of raping grade 7 pupil

A 47-year-old man appeared in court after he was accused of raping a grade 7 pupil. The Gauteng Education Department says it’s prepared a letter of intention to suspend a 47-year-old teacher accused of sexually assaulting a grade 7 pupil at a primary school near Ivory Park in Midrand. The man appeared in the Tembisa Magistrates Court this afternoon and is expected to remain in custody until December.  


Man sentenced to life in jail for raping daughter

A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of his daughter. The man appeared in the Madadeni Regional Court on Thursday after he was convicted of raping the now 9-year-old girl, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed in a statement. The Newcastle Family Violence and Child Protection Unit investigated the man after the matter was reported to the police last year.


Four life terms for man convicted of rape

A man convicted of raping his girlfriend’s daughter was sentenced in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court to four life terms, Western Cape police said on Thursday. Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said the man was sentenced on Wednesday.


Woman raped at a prayer meeting

A Mpumalanga pastor has cancelled future night prayer meetings at his church after his congregants were robbed and a woman raped, a Sapa correspondent reported on Friday. Serial killer on Pretoria streets

A serial killer, believed to be behind the rape and murder of at least 10 young girls, is on the loose in the capital city, Pretoria. A manhunt by a team of detectives is under way as fears mount that the body count could rapidly increase. Police started patching together evidence three weeks ago, linking the killings, thought to have started in 2004, after the discovery of a body in East Lynne, Pretoria.


Five cops accused of raping women, girls

Five police officers – three from the Western Cape and two from Gauteng – are accused of raping women they were tasked with protecting. All five have appeared in court. Two of the Cape officers appeared before a Worcester magistrate yesterday.


Girl, 6, raped twice, stabbed 9 times

Senior cop convicted of rape

A former senior policeman has been convicted on several charges including rape by the Sasolburg Regional Court, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said on Friday. “(The court) found 37-year-old Mahlatse Thobakgale guilty of three counts of rape, one count of pointing a firearm and one count of negligent discharge of a firearm,” spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.


Woman, 92, repeatedly raped

North West police are searching for a man who repeatedly raped a 92-year-old woman in Mmakau in the early hours of Sunday. “The Gogo’s front door was locked by chains, but forcefully broken, in order for the suspect to gain entry,” said Captain Adele Myburgh. She said the man repeatedly raped the woman for three hours before fleeing on foot.
