Police on Friday presented official crime statistics spanning from April 1 to December 2016 to the police committee in Parliament, where they painted a picture of a country winning the fight against crime. According to the statistics, 14 333 cases of murder were reported in the time period, a decrease of 10 in comparison to the previous trimester.
A George man who initially faced more than 3 000 charges of rape and child pornography has pleaded guilty to 67 of them as part of a plea agreement. Eyewitness News reported that the State agreed to the plea bargain in exchange for a life sentence after the 51-year-old man admitted to the 67 charges. They included drugging and raping seven of his daughter’s friends during sleepovers at his home between 2012 and 2014. The girls were aged between 10 and 12.
A 47-year-old man appeared in court after he was accused of raping a grade 7 pupil. A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of his daughter. The man appeared in the Madadeni Regional Court on Thursday after he was convicted of raping the now 9-year-old girl, police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed in a statement. The Newcastle Family Violence and Child Protection Unit investigated the man after the matter was reported to the police last year.

A serial killer, believed to be behind the rape and murder of at least 10 young girls, is on the loose in the capital city, Pretoria. A manhunt by a team of detectives is under way as fears mount that the body count could rapidly increase.
