Domestic worker jailed for killing Midrand employer

A domestic worker and three men who killed Midrand resident Thohira Mitha in her home in 2014, were sentenced to lengthy jail terms by the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Thursday. Midrand residents rocked by rental scams

Two incidents of rental scams in Midrand leave tenants reeling. FPI Property Investments, a property company in Carlswald, told Midrand Reporter that a pregnant woman came to their offices to collect the keys to a property she had paid to rent, apparently from the property company.  After being on ice for several months‚ the trial of former Midrand magistrate Johannes Kgomo has resumed.  On Wednesday Paul Mthabela‚ the man accusing Kgomo of soliciting a R500‚000 bribe from him‚ continued to testify at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Midrand cops accused of double bungle

Midrand police have come under fire after a prisoner died in custody and an attempted kidnapping was allegedly ignored by on-duty officers. Both incidents happened within the space of just a few days. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has launched an investigation into the death of a man arrested for fraud and detained at the station. On July 8, the man was found in a pool of his own blood among other detainees.

Domestic worker held for Midrand murder

 A domestic worker has been arrested after a woman was killed and her home robbed at a Midrand complex, Gauteng police said on Friday. The 27-year-old woman was due to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court shortly, said Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela. Police were searching for three men believed to be her accomplices.

Hijacking is rife

Ivory Park Police Station has received a lot of hijacking reports in the recent months. The station’s spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the station’s management is appealing to the community to ensure their vehicles are safely locked at all times and are parked in a safe place.

Murder, theft-out-of-motor-vehicles up in Midrand

The local crime stats for the Midrand policing precinct showcased an increase in theft-out-of-motor-vehicles from 574 incidents in the 2004/5 financial year to 918 incidents in 2013/14. The South African Police Services announced that nationally murder had increased in the 2013/14 financial year, and this was also reflected in the local crime statistics for Midrand policing precinct. Murder incidents had increased from 14 incidents in 2004/5 to 19 incidents in 2013/14 financial year.

Crime tips from the Midrand police

Midrand police and Midrand Community Policing Forum issued crime tips for residents. Colonel Steven Moodley said, “Crime incidents surrounding motor vehicles are a real concern in Midrand, accounting for nearly half the crime reported in the area. This is a real concern because in many cases these crimes can be prevented by a more vigilant approach by drivers.”

SA cops and Interpol catch UK wanted man in Midrand

A convicted drug trafficker and fraudster on the run from the United Kingdom was arrested in Midrand by South Africa’s police and Interpol, police spokesman Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said on Sunday.   Martin Evans, 52, from Swansea in Wales, had been on the run since 2011 when he failed to return to prison after being given a short release of a few days. He was serving 21 years for conspiracy to supply cocaine, and fraudulent trading.
