Crime Chat Launches With Overwhelming Support

Crime Chat – a radio show launched on Monday to increase awareness of criminal activities and methodologies drew overwhelming support from the public.

Midrand based Community Radio Mix 93.8 FM quietly launched the show on the Monday of a long weekend with a public holiday on Tuesday/Human Rights Day, yet the response and incoming calls to report suspected drug related activities, neighbourhood brothels,  locations of continually increasing traffic violations and noisy entertainment and club venues was overwhelming.

The Crime Chat panel consisted of Captain Chetty, Midrand SAPS, Tanya Nyce, PRO Midrand Community Policing Forum, Reino Jonker, Tactical/TRSS Guarding and Security Services and Dianne Phillips, strategic crime analyst. The show was hosted and produced by Al Karaki, Mix 93.8 presenter and Director – Fight Against Crime.

Report backs and current status of crime kicked off the show – including the processes at roadblocks and stop and search operations, followed by much higher than normal inputs, comments and questions coming through email and SMS lines with response and discussion. Lastly, the panel provided actions that citizens could assist with in the fight against crime which focussed primarily on information on criminal activities within residential complexes, neighbourhoods and near schools.

The volunteers CPF patrollers were also acknowledged for their dedication and support of being the “eyes and the ears” of law enforcement entities such as the SAPS and JMPD/Joburg Metro Policing Department.

Numerous requests have already come through supporting that the show be continued on a regular basis which is now being planned for every third Monday evening from 8-9 pm and it appears that Crime Chat is the only regular dedicated radio crime show in the country.
